''What you are as a person is far more important than what you are as a basketball player."

John Wooden
(1910-2010)
I think that he means the character you are is more important than being a basketball player. You can be the best basketball player out there, but you can have a really bad character. Your character shows a lot about you. Being a great basketball player is a bonus, but the person you are is far more important. If you are a person with strong, great character, you'll take your team to places far from failure. However, if you are bossy or if you choose to do drugs to boost your ability, chances are your team is going to hit the ground and reach failure. Sometimes having a great character in the court can boost you up to victory. Your team will like you for who you are. Sometimes even people would admire the way you act. Sometimes being a bad person/basketball player can make things worse. Your team won't depend on you, and they can even care less about you. Sometimes even the team will hate you and they will face their backs at you. Sometimes you won't even get along with your teamate, that you might even become enemies. That's why being a good person is important than being a basketplayer because you won't get hated on for being a bad person.
