Some medical scientists work on specific diseases, and work with a variation of medical drugs. So it varies what they are trying to find out.

Education:
There are many requirements to be a medical scientist. For instance, what is truly important in the beginning is a medical degree, or P.h.D. Luckily, there are many programs in universities and colleges that help a person get these needed requirements. Not all medical scientists are licensed. However, those that are licensed, are the ones that work with drugs, gene therapy, etc.
I would like to be a medical scientist as well. I had dreams of helping people find a treatment and it would just fascinate me.
